About the Capital Area Humane Society’s Humane Investigations

y state law, the Capital Area Humane Society is the only agency with commissioned Humane Agents in Franklin County, who investigate cases of alleged abuse of ALL animals.

The Capital Area Humane Society is the lead agency in Franklin County investigating cases of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment.  The Humane Society's animal cruelty investigations department provides services to the citizens of Franklin County under Ohio Revised Code 1717.6.  Our commissioned humane agents enforce all local and state laws pertaining to the care and treatment of animals as reported by members of the public and partner agencies including other law enforcement agencies, health departments, code enforcement and social service agencies.  More than 95 percent of the cases filed by the Capital Area Humane Society in the Franklin County Environmental Court resulted in conviction of the defendant. 

Outfitted in bullet-proof vests, our humane agents are in the community seven days a week investigating complaints and educating the public.  Additional programs operated by the Animal Cruelty Investigations Department include:  humane education for children, Safe Haven sheltering for the pets of victims of domestic violence, and no-cost spay/neuter services for community feral cat caregivers.

Reporting Animal Cruelty

ll reports of cruelty to animals are taken seriously by the Capital Area Humane Society. To report cruelty, animal abandonment or cases of animal fighting, please contact the Capital Area Humane Society at (614) 777-7387, ext. 250 to reach confidential voicemail.  Please be prepared to provide the street address and zip code of the property where the animal is located.  All calls are confidential.
