Volunteer
Have you considered volunteering for the Capital Area Humane
Society lately? Not only will you learn about animals and get
lots of licks and tail wags, but you will also meet others who
share similar interests.
With the advent of the Skills Training,
Engagement & Practice for Success (STEPS) program volunteers
will spend 25 hours learning about the mission of the Capital
Area Humane Society as well as the fundamentals behind caring
for the animals. Training classes will be offered, each
consisting of 20 hours of interactive classroom/clinic learning
and 5 hours of mentored volunteering. Class will take place on
Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings. Attendance is required
at all sessions to graduate and participate in the volunteer
program. These classes are for adult volunteers as well as
students age 12 and up.
At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive a
certificate of completion as well as credit for 25 volunteer
hours, which will fulfill the community service requirements for
many local school systems. Volunteers wishing to continue to
serve will be eligible to volunteer in entry level positions.
For more information, email
STEPS@cahs-pets.org with "Volunteer Training Class" in the
subject line.
Applications for the new STEPS training classes are available by
clicking on the link to the left and at the shelter. The $30
fee includes a t-shirt, training manual and name badge.
Applications are due three weeks prior to the start of the
training class. These are competitive applications and space is
limited, so submitting an application does not automatically
mean you are in the class.

Age Requirement
While the majority of our volunteers are
age 16 or older, we do have junior volunteers, ages 12-15. All
junior volunteers are required to work along side a parent,
guardian or another adult volunteer partner over 21-years-old.
The junior volunteer and their Adult Volunteer Partner will
always volunteer as a team. It is important that all junior
volunteers discuss becoming a Humane Society volunteer with an
Adult Volunteer Partner before signing up for training
class. Both partners must submit a STEPS application.
Humane Society volunteers ages 55 and up are eligible for special benefits available through
RSVP, a program of
Firstlink.
